Sustainable NYC has so many Vegan friendly options and plenty of eco-friendly shopping.
The other day I was running errands in the city and by the time I realized I needed a pick-me-up I was standing in front of a sign beckoning me with fair trade organic coffee and local baked goods. I popped inside, went straight to the cafe and ordered an iced coffee and a vegan chocolate espresso cookie. I was so absorbed in my caffeine fix that it took me a moment to notice that I had stumbled upon a green shop gold mine.
Sustainable NYC is an independent eco general store, boutique and cafe located in the East Village alongside Tompkins Sq. park. The interior smells like a mix of essential oils, various exotic soy candles and of course sweet coffee aromas. Thirty minutes later I was STILL browsing through all of their lovely organic goods (now fully caffienated!). Not only were there a plethora of all-natural, affordable products for skin and hair, there were also staples for the new york city fashion foreward woman. They carry vegan sandals from one of my favorite shoe brands, Olsenhaus, and a wide array of luscious nail polish colors from the NYC cruelty-free brand, Priti. Priti polishes are all completely non-toxic and made without toluene, dibutyl phthalate (DHB) and formaldehyde- all known carcinogenic ingredients. Paired with your favorite eco friendly sandals they make the perfect combo for Spring/Summer.
I also checked out the vegan mascaras made with beet sugar, which were amazing, and some very durable, upcycled pouches made by Green Guru Eco Adventure Gear. Other must haves were the Hibiscus and Ginger lip balms and lip soothers made by Brooklyn based company Pretty Monsters that come in biodegradable eco tubes made from 100% post consumer waste. Pretty genius huh?!? It’s quite possible that I have some sort of calling in the delicious-vegan-skin-care-items-made-by-uber-hip-Brooklyn-babes life category.
My last obsession, before I decided that I couldn’t fit the entire shop into my tiny apartment, was the divine vegan soaps from Conneticut Natural Soapworks. With scents like Rosemary Mint and Basil & Sage it’s hard to go wrong. Ok eco babes go buy your fave vegan soaps, face scrubs and moisturizers, slip into your whimsical cotton dresses and Olsenhaus sandals, throw your Priti nail polish on, drop some Pretty Monsters lip balm in your Recycled Pull Tabs Leda Purse and paint the town RED.
